My name is Ella. I'm a travel writer and photographer, based in Glasgow.
I'm a university-educated, fully qualified EFL teacher, travel writer, copywriter, journalist and photographer born and raised by the ocean.
I started my first blog The Dank Traveller in 2017 with the intention of telling my own personal stories and experiences as a wanderer and creative. Although The Dank Traveller began as a travel blog, as time went by it became more of a diary - a journal of my writings, whims and adventures on the road.
When the pandemic hit, I was travelling in South America. We wound up on the last flight out of Santiago thinking we’d be back in a few weeks’ time. After it become apparent Covid-19 wasn’t going anywhere any time soon, I applied for a UK Working Holiday Visa and set up shop in Glasgow. I got a job as a copywriter at a digital marketing agency and my dreams of becoming a full-time travel writer were shelved.
Two years later, I was battling corporate burnout and struggling with the usual confines of a desk job. So I quit and Ella Abroad was born.
My intention was and continues to be real travel. You'll find no tales of luxury five-star resorts or private jets here, but stories of real down-to-earth nomads who sleep in hostels, camp behind gas stations and travel by the thumb; who eat and dance with locals and immerse themselves in their cultures and traditions. I also write the odd travel guide.
Travel has been and will always remain my greatest love. To date, I've travelled extensively through Europe, Asia and Latin America - and I’ve got no plans to quit.
